The Canadian Improv Games expand to the North

The Canadian Improv Games (CIG) is thrilled to be heading to Iqaluit for the Arctic Comedy Festival. Bringing our program to the North has been a long-standing dream for the CIG and with the help of our friends at Canadian North- that dream can finally come true.

National Program Manager Spencer Dunn will travel with the Canadian North Arctic Comedy Festivals to Iqaluit where he’ll facilitate workshops for local high school students and teachers. The week of workshops will culminate in an Improv Showcase where students will perform alongside professional improvisers as part of the comedy festival’s lineup.

What will happen during the visit

Spencer Dunn will travel to Iqaluit on Thursday October 6th and will:

  • Facilitate workshops for students in the community (both in and out of the school setting)

  • Meet with teachers to help support the continued success of the program post-visit

  • Attend all evening performances produced by the Comedy Festival and promote the CIG’s program.

What will happen after the visit

The CIG will continue to connect with students in Iqaluit, and further communities, to help support their improv learning throughout the school year.

Up to 8 students will travel to Ottawa for the National Improv Festival in April of 2023 to take part in workshops and the national tournament.

What we hope to achieve in the next three years

  • Send a CIG representative with the Canadian North Arctic Comedy Festival every year to meet with schools in the North

  • Create a Nunavut region of the Canadian Improv Games and bring students from communities outside of Iqaluit to Iqaluit for the Nunavut regional program.

  • Provide continued support, contact, and programming for all schools outside of the CIG’s normal geographical reach.
